Time to get Serious: 5 Ways to Prepare for the new School Year in August

Although it may feel like Summer just started, the time to start preparing for the new school year has arrived. Thinking about starting school again in September can feel overwhelming at times - especially if you’re about to enter your final GCSE year. The best thing you can do to ensure a smooth start to the new school year, is to prepare!

The last few weeks of August are the perfect opportunity to get ahead for the new academic year. So if you’re ready to hit the ground running next month, keep reading to find out our 5 top tips to prepare for the new school year.

1 - Get All Your School Supplies

Purchasing all of your school supplies in August - pens, pencils, notebooks, textbooks, revision supplies and folders - is one of the easiest ways to start preparing for the school year. Knowing you have everything ready to keep on top of school work, homework and revision will help you feel ready and prepared during those first lessons back. Even better, all of these items will be on sale at the minute so take the opportunity to stock up.

2 - Read Little and Often

Keeping your brain active over the summer months is so important. Completing the extra reading your teachers set for each subject is one of the most effective ways to revise the subject content you covered in year 10. Plus, if you’re in the habit of reading, completing homework and additional tasks will be a lot easier to complete when you’re back to school.

3 - Readjust your Sleep Schedule

Do you find over the summer that you’re staying up later at night, and sleeping in in the mornings? If your sleep schedule has gone out the window since school ended it’s important to get in back on track before school starts. Sleep is so important to helping your brain retain important information and staying focused in class. Do yourself a favour in the long run and start September well rested.

4 - Practice Time Management

Year 11 is a busy year! Not only do you have to juggle school commitments - such as revision, practice exams and extracurriculars - but you also need to find time for your friends, family, hobbies and many even a part time job. To make sure you can keep track of everything you need to do next year, start practicing your time management skills now. Get a calendar and create a little to-do-list each day, so you can get into the habit of budgeting your time.

5 - Reflect and Revise

Before you start this school year, think back to the past one. What went well? What achievements are you proud of? What do you think you could have done better? Reflecting on your past academic successes is a great way to get in the right frame of mind for September. You could even create a revision action plan, or some new school year resolutions. Remember - the more you do now, the more successful the next school year is likely to be. ... See MoreSee Less
